Privacy

This page says plainly who runs this site, what happens to your DNA file and the art made from it, and what you can do about it. If something here is unclear, write to contact@understandyourgenome.org and we will fix the wording.

Who runs this

mygenomic.art is run by Charles Imbusch as a private individual, together with its sister service Understand Your Genome. For anything about privacy or your data, write to contact@understandyourgenome.org.

What we collect and why

  • Your email, to create your account and sign you in. The account is shared with Understand Your Genome: one login for both sites.
  • The DNA file you upload (a VCF or a genotyping-chip export) and the results computed from it — ancestry, haplogroups and the rest of the analysis. This is what the art is drawn from.
  • The images you make and your history of them, so you can come back to them.
  • Your email again, once per upload, to tell you when your results are ready. No newsletters, no marketing.

Your DNA file

You upload on this site, and the file is analysed for mygenomic.art by Understand Your Genome on computers we run ourselves. The analysis compares your file with public reference data that we keep locally; your file is not sent to any outside service for this. It is used to produce your results and your art — never to train a model, never sold, never shared, and never looked at by us unless you ask us for help.

Only you can see your results, while signed in. This is enforced in the database itself (row-level security), not just hidden in the interface.

How the images are made

Some images are drawn by code on our own servers (the quilt, the word poster, the maps). Others are painted by a hosted image model, currently Grok by xAI. That model receives a short text description only — for example a haplogroup name, the names of reference populations and a theme such as music or sports. It never receives your DNA file, your genotypes, your name or your email address.

Where it is stored, and for how long

On infrastructure we run and control ourselves, encrypted in storage. We keep your file and results for as long as you want. On the Your DNA page you can delete an upload together with all its results; that is a real deletion, not a hide switch. To close your account entirely, write to contact@understandyourgenome.org.

What we don't do

  • No analytics, no tracking cookies, no advertising.
  • Fonts are loaded from Google Fonts, so your browser asks Google's servers for them. No other third-party code runs on this site.
  • No automated decisions about you: everything here is art and information.

Your rights

You can ask what we hold about you, have it corrected, get a copy of it, or have it deleted — most of it you can do yourself from your account. For anything else, write to contact@understandyourgenome.org. You also have the right to complain to a data-protection authority.

Who this is for

This site is for adults (18 and over). Upload only your own DNA, or DNA you are entitled to share.
